Prophecy Update 1998 Jerusalem, A Cup of Trembling! - See what is in store for the nation of Israel. This tiny nation the size of New Jersey, continues to be the focal point of the world.

Ministry of Pastor Joe Guglielmo teachings through the Bible, verse by verse for a better understanding of Gods Word.

As we come to the end of 1998, we have seen many amazing and tragic events that have been notched into the history of this world. And 1999 looks no less interesting. Randall Price, in his book, "Jerusalem In Prophecy" spoke of a billboard sign that he saw as he was traveling through Lynchburg, Virginia. The picture on this billboard showed a row of houses in a neighborhood, and in front of each one there was the trademark "SOLD" sign of that particular real estate agent. The headline on the billboard read: "How do you tell the greatest name in real estate?...The signs are everywhere!"

How do we as Christians know that the Lords return is drawing closer?...The signs are everywhere! When you read the papers, listen to the news, you can see that the things that the prophets spoke and wrote about, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, are coming to pass right before our eyes.

Now we can focus on many issues when it comes to prophecy and world events, but there is one that we are going to be specifically focusing upon, and that is the Jewish people living in the land of Israel. You see, if you want to know what time it is on God's prophetic time clock, watch what is happening in Israel. As Randall Price said: "Prophecy is God's road map for roads only now under construction, and we are told that one day all roads will lead to Jerusalem."

In Zechariah chapter 12, lets begin reading in verse 2, "Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it...In that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the LORD before them. It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem." Zechariah 12:2-3, 8-9.

This tiny little nation the size of New Jersey, has become the focal point of the world. The leaders of the world are trying to stabilize the Middle East, to make it a land of peace, and Israel and its people are the center of attention. Jerusalem is and will be a cup of trembling for all nations who try to oppose her, as we shall see.

This evening we are going to be looking at several aspects that are needed to be fulfilled before the Messiah comes, and these are all related to Israel. And, as I said, if you want to know what time it is on God's prophetic time clock, you need to look at Israel, and you are going to see, time is running out!

Many look at this event, which occurred back on May 14, 1948, as a non-event. Now you can think and believe that if you want to, but God speaks very clearly that He will bring His people back into the land. For me, seeing Israel back in the land after not having a home land for almost 2000 years is truly a miracle. But what seems impossible by man's abilities, is always possible with God. And knowing that God had promised to bring them back in the land, what God has promised He is fully able to perform and He did!

In Ezekiel chapter 37, Ezekiel is given a vision of dry, lifeless bones, and God asks him "...'Son of man, can these bones live?'" Again, from a human perspective, of course not. But Ezekiel does not remove God from the picture, and he says, "...'O Lord GOD, You know.'" In other words, if anyone can do this, God can!

And as Ezekiel is watching, the bones came together with the muscles, tendons, flesh, and God breathed life into these bodies. The question is, "Who does this represent? Whose bones are these?" Well, we don't need to speculate or guess, because God tells us in Ezekiel 37:11-12, where we read, "Then He said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, 'Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!' Therefore prophesy and say to them, 'Thus saysthe Lord GOD: "Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel."

God is saying that He will not only bring Israel back to life, but He will also place them back in the land of Israel. Before this became a reality, back on March 1, 1944, Yasser Arafat's uncle, Najamin el-Husseini said on Radio Berlin regarding the increase numbers of Jews in the land: "Arabs, rise as one man and fight for your sacred rights. Kill the Jews wherever you find them. This pleases God [Allah] and religion [and] saves your honor. God is with you."

Then, on May 14, 1948, in Tel Aviv, David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister, proclaimed the birth of the sovereign state of Israel. Upon Israel's declaration of independence, of their statehood, they were immediately attacked by seven Arab armies and out-manned 30 to 1. The goal was to drive Israel into the Sea, and to destroy them!

What took place? IDF General Shimon Erem said back in 1948: "Twenty thousand untrained civilians, many of them speaking languages which could not be understood took on armies represented by 100 million Arabs, and prevailed. It was a miracle of God, there is no other explanation. God was keeping His word. The key was faith. We believed God. We believed the prophets. And because of God, we prevailed. The difference is faith in God, the God of the Bible."

General Shimon Erem believed what God said and now, their existence in the land of Israel is a fulfillment of what God promised even though the enemy was bigger and stronger than they were. It is as David said in Psalm 124, we see played out in the history of the re-birth of the nation of Israel. David said in verse 1 of Psalm 124, "'If it had not been the LORD who was on our side,' Let Israel now say; 'If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, When men rose up against us, Then they would have swallowed us alive, When their wrath was kindled against us; Then the waters would have overwhelmed us, The stream would have gone over our soul; Then the swollen waters Would have gone over our soul.' Blessed be the LORD, Who has not given us as prey to their teeth. Our soul hasescaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers; The snare is broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, Who made heaven and earth." Psalm 124:1-8.

Not only is it important for Israel to be back in the land, but that Jerusalem is also in their possession. This did not occur until June of 1967, after Jordan joined several Arab countries in initiating a war against Israel. In defending itself, Israel gained control of the eastern part of Jerusalem on June 7th, uniting this city once again.

Where are we on God's prophetic clock? Psalm 102:16 says "For the LORD shall build up Zion; He shall appear in His glory." Zechariah 2:4, "...'Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls, because of the multitude of men and livestock in it.'" Isaiah 51:11, "So the ransomed of the LORD shall return, And come to Zion with singing, With everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness; Sorrow and sighing shall flee away." Psalm 147:2, "The LORD builds up Jerusalem; He gathers together the outcasts of Israel." And Zechariah 8:7-8 we read, "Thus says the LORD of hosts: 'Behold, I will save My people from the land of the east And from the land of the west; I will bring them back, And they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. They shall be My people And I will be their God, In truth and righteousness.'"

And on June 7, 1967, as Israeli troops moved into the old city and stood at the western wall or the wailing wall for prayer, Rabbi Shlomo Goren declared: "We have taken the city of God. We are entering the Messianic era for Jewish people, and I promise...That what we are responsible for we will take care of." The city of Jerusalem was once again reunited and the star of David flew over the nations capitol, JERUSALEM!

What is amazing to me is the fact that almost half of the worlds population holds the city of Jerusalem in reverence. Some 1 billion Muslims, 1 billion Catholics, 400 million Orthodox adherents, and 400 million Protestants. And yet, behind all this religious fervor for this city, we see hatred and disdain for the Jewish people and their right to be in the land. And we read in Psalm 105:8-11, "He remembers His covenant forever, The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations, The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac, And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel as an everlasting covenant, Saying, 'To you I will give the land of Canaan As the allotment of yourinheritance.'" (Genesis 17:7-8).

Robin Cook, British Foreign Secretary and Representative of the European Union, stood within the city limits of Jerusalem and said to Israel's leaders: "I do not recognize your right to be here!" And moments before this comment, as he was being introduced by one of Israel's leaders who said: "Welcome to Jerusalem, the undivided capital of Israel," he rudely interrupted and said "And the capital of the Palestinians." Since when?

And our own Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright commented on what Robin cook had said, and her comments were very disturbing. She said: "His behavior was perfectly appropriate." Do you see how anti-Semitism is on the rise throughout the world! Most of the nations of the world, including the United States, Great Britain, even the Vatican and the World Council of Churches, refuse to acknowledge Jerusalem as the nations capitol, but only will recognize Tel Aviv! In fact, not one Arab state issues a map, including those maps sold in Jerusalem, showing a place called "Israel"! This nation of Israel, and its capital of Jerusalem, has become a cup of trembling!

As important as it is for Israel to be back in the land, to occupy the city of David, Jerusalem, it is just as important that the temple once again be rebuilt. In the book of Revelation chapter 11, we are told "Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, 'Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months.'" Revelation 11:1-2.

During the tribulation period the temple will be built, and the sacrifices will continue until the 3 1/2 year mark, when the antichrist stops the sacrifices, enters the temple and demands to be worshipped as God. You can read of this in Daniel chapter 9, and Jesus expounds on it in Matthew chapter 24. The temple will be rebuilt!

The question is, "How close are we?" Gershon Solomon, who has traced his lineage to that of king Solomon, is head of the Temple Mount Faithful, and he believes God has called him to re-build the temple, just as God called Solomon to build the first temple.

They already have a four-ton marble stone hewn out at Mitzpe Rimon without metal tools, ready to be placed into position as the corner stone of the temple, but the Arabs won't allow them to do that for their holy shrines have been built upon the temple mount. And the last time there was even talk of laying the corner stone, a riot broke out on the temple mount, and the Muslims threw rocks down from the temple mount injuring many who had come to pray at the western wall or wailing wall.

With that in mind, how in the world can the temple be re-built? Interestingly enough, John is told that when the temple is re-built, to leave out the outer court because it has been given over to the gentiles. If the Jews built their temple, not over the Muslim site of the Dome of the Rock, but over the Dome of the Spirits, which is most likely the place for the ancient holy of holies of the temple to have been located, thatwould place the Dome of the Rock in the outer court, and thus they could be in existence side-by-side. In fact, this deal could be the treaty that the antichrist makes with Israel to allow them to re-build their temple.

This treaty is spoken of in Daniel chapter 9:27, which says "Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate."

Most of the temple implements have already been completed. They are preparing the priests for their work in the temple. They have the priestly robes completed. They even have the plans drawn up for what the third temple will look like. And when we were in Israel last January, they were working on completing the 7 branched oil burning lamp that stood in front of the holy of holies, the table of show bread was already completed! The Temple Mount Faithful are just waiting for the word and they will lay the corner stone for the re-building of the temple, that is how close we are!

In 1869, when Mark Twain visited Jerusalem, he wrote: "We pressed on toward the goal of our crusade, renowned Jerusalem. The further we went, the hotter the sun got, and the more rocky and bare, repulsive and dreary the landscape became...There was hardly a tree or shrub anywhere. Even the olive and the cactus, those fast friends of a worthless soil, had almost deserted the country...Rags, wretchedness, poverty, and dirt, those signs and symbols that indicate the presence of Muslim rule...Jerusalem is mournful and dreary and lifeless. I would not desire to live here." Not so today!

We read in Ezekiel chapter 36, "But you, O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Israel, for they are about to come...I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. I will call for the grain and multiply it, and bring no famine upon you...The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass by." Ezekiel 36:8, 29, 34. Also, in Amos chapter 9 we read, "'Behold, the days are coming,' says the LORD, 'When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains shall drip with sweet wine, And all the hills shall flow with it. I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them. I will plant them in their land, And no longer shall they be pulled up From the land I have given them,' Says the LORD your God." Amos 9:13-15.

What do we see today? The land is bursting forth with life, in fact, with the increased moisture content with all the trees that have been planted, the latter rains have returned to the land. This barren desert came to life just as God said it would. According to the Jewish National Fund, they have planted not millions of trees, but billions of trees in the land of Israel. In agricultural production, this tiny nation the size of New Jersey, is the third largest producer behind the United States and Canada. And, in the European Common Market, 80% of its fruit comes from Israel! The land is barren no more, just as God said!

Here we are speaking of the so-called peace process that is going on between the nation of Israel and the Palestinians. And we are seeing "Peace, Peace! When there is no peace." Listen carefully to these quotes that I am going to share with you, because our press is not always telling us the whole story of what is going on in the Middle East!

Listen carefully to what Time magazine had to say back on April 4, 1988: "Had Egypt, Syria and the other Arab nations accepted Israel's right to exist in 1947, the Palestinians could have been living for the past 40 years in a state of their own." After the battle in 1948, the Jordan Daily Al Difaa reported: "The Arab governments told us, 'Get out so that we can get in.' So we got out, but they did not get in." You see, if they would have accepted the land the United Nations wanted to give them in November of 1947, they could of had 82% of the land and they could have been living in a Palestinian state for the last 50 years! But they rejected it.

Now the deal is for the west bank, 40% of the land of Israel, making 18.2% under full Palestinian rule, and 21.8% under joint Palestinian and Israeli control. And that sounds good, it sounds fair on the surface, but when you look at the heart of the matter, the Palestinians are not interested in 40% of the land. They want it all, including Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state, which leaves the Jews completely out of the picture, they will be destroyed! As Yasser Arafat has said, "We will enter Jerusalem victorious and will raise the [Palestinian] flag on its walls." Also understand that in the Muslim holy book, the Koran, Jerusalem is not mentioned even once, while in the Hebrew scriptures Jerusalem is mentioned 677 times, the city of David 44 times and Zion 153 times, and is spoken of being the land that God gave to His people, the Jews. And yet, the Muslims claim Jerusalem as a holy site that is not even mentioned in their own scriptures!

The Hizeballah Manifesto states:

"...Our struggle against the Jews is extremely wide-ranging and grave, so much so that it will need all the loyal efforts we can wield to be followed by further steps and reinforced by successive battalions from the multifarious Arab and Islamic world, until the enemies are defeated and Allah's victory prevails..."

Now back in 1996 Yasser Arafat claimed that he had revoked the notorious charter of the Palestine Liberation Organization, which calls for the destruction of Israel, but he never did so. And, again we hear talk about him removing this charter, but, as you will see, talk is cheap, even if it is removed.

On November 30, 1998, Time magazine reported the following:

"Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's outburst last weak - threatening to renew the intifadeh and warning Israel 'Our rifles are ready' - seemed strange, given that the Knesset was debating a controversial land transfer to the Palestinian authority. According to a senior aid, however, the Chairman's remarks, to a gathering of his Fatah organization, were meant for local consumption only..." I wonder why?

The day Arafat signed the Declaration of Principles, he assured the Palestinians over Jordanian TV that he was simply implementing the 10-step 1947 PLO plan of phases for Israel's destruction. The first step, now successfully accomplished, calls for obtaining territory within Israel as a launch pad for her final holocaust!

After the handshake on the White House lawn, the United States removed the PLO from its list of terrorist organizations. "However, since the beginning of the 'peace' process, statistics reveal that PLO terrorism has actually increased. Between September 1993 and April 1997 there have been 32 Israeli civilians murdered, 438 Israeli civilians injured, 21 Israeli soldiers murdered, 527 Israeli soldiers injured, 239 Israelis stabbed, 88 bombings, 1,200 petrol bombs thrown, 210 shootings, and 51 hand grenade attacks. There were 286 attacks in 1996 (from firebombs to suicide bombings), and 521 attacks in 1997." So much for peace!

A handshake, a promise, a deal, the signing of a contract is meaningless to Muslims. Yasser Arafat, early in 1994, in a speech at Johannesburg Mosque, called for the continuation of the Jihad (holy war) so that the Arabs could retake Jerusalem. He said:

"This agreement [between the PLO and Israel], I am not considering it more than the agreement which had been signed between our prophet Mohammed and Kuraish." You see, after signing this "peace treaty" with his own tribe, the Kuraish, Mohammed broke it on a pre-text, killed the Kuraish leaders and conquered Mecca. So what Arafat was saying is that the PLO's agreement with Israel is only a step toward her conquest and it is intended to be broken!

In fact, Arafat has said on several occasions, "The goal of our struggle is the end of Israel, and there can be no compromise." It is as Psalm 83:1-5 says, "Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, And do not be still, O God! For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; And those who hate You have lifted up their head. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, And consulted together against Your sheltered ones. They have said, 'Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.' For they have consulted together with one consent; They form a confederacy against You." Is that not what we see happening not only with the Palestinians, but with the nations of the world as well?

Lets first look at the United Nations to see how they have turned their backs on Israel. As of March 1996, there have been 321 UN general assembly resolutions and 49 UN security council resolutions condemning Israel. How many times have Arab nations been condemned for their vows to exterminate Israel? How many times have they been condemned for their military attacks, suicide bombings, terrorism against Israel? Not once! That is 370 to 0! I think there is something wrong here!

On July 17, the United Nations adopted the Rome convention, establishing an international criminal court. Unlike the world court, which tries nations, the new ICC would try individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. One of the provisos which was inserted by the Arab nations and the Palestinians is the classification of the Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria - anything beyond the 1948 cease fire lines - as illegal, putting them on the same moral place as genocide and ethnic cleansing! The stage is being set!

Former state department official Leonard Horwin writes that "...The U.S. is 'dumping' Israel in favor of 'Islamic dictatorships' which are the implacable enemies of the free world, and of an open society, and in particular of the 'great Satan' USA." Also, Secretary of State, Albright has told Israel that the U.S. will notsupport her in the UN in the face of mounting opposition from the Arab world. The operative term of the Secretary of State is, "If it conflicts with our broader interests in the region." We have begun to turn our backs on Israel, and that is a big mistake!

The European Union headed up by Tony Blair of England have begun a heavy campaign against Israel. On July 23 of this year the British government elevated the Palestinian's London headquarters to full embassy status. When asked about it, deputy foreign minister Derek Fatchett said it was out of England's desire to "be in code with European Union."

On July of this year, in one of Israel's Hebrew Language papers, Ha'aretz said that France has already endorsed the establishment of a Palestinian state. And 43 nations have declared state status for Palestine, with passports, including the United States and England.

So what is the big deal about a Palestinian state? Yasser Arafat has set May, 1999 as the date to declare a Palestinian state unless Israel meets his (and others) demands. He promises a destructive war against Israel, with "many nations" joining in the battle led by the Palestinians which will eclipse all of the previous defensive wars fought by Israel since 1948. And the capitol of this new state, he wants it to be Jerusalem! Could this be the spark that starts the Magog invasion spoken of in Ezekiel 38 & 39. Watch and see!

Don't be mistaken, all this talk of peace is only going to lead to a false peace that is ushered in by the antichrist on the heels of a world war. Russia with its Muslim allies will be dragged into a war against Israel and God will destroy the Russian army with her allies. It is on the heels of this nuclear war that the antichrist will come on the scene and will make a peace treaty in the middle east, with the solutions to the worlds economic, political, ecological problems. But as Paul said in I Thessalonians 5:3, "For when theysay, 'Peace and safety!' then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape."

True peace will only come when the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ comes and sets up His kingdom here on earth. Of that day, Isaiah tells us "Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the Lord's house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come and say, 'Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.' For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat theirswords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore." Isaiah 2:2-4.

For Israel, they will initiate the Lords return. In Matthew 23:39, Jesus said "for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!'" As a large portion of Jews, who have left Jerusalem after the antichrist enters the temple and demands to be worshipped as God, flee for safety to the rock city of Petra from the wrath of the antichrist, and God will protect them for the remaining 3 1/2 years. It is there they come to know Jesus as their Messiah, for in Zechariah 12:10 and 13:6 we read "And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants ofJerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn....And one will say to him, 'What are these wounds between your arms?' Then he will answer, 'Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.'"

It is after that we read in Zechariah 14:1-4, 9 "Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, And your spoil will be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; The city shall be taken, The houses rifled, And the women ravished. Half of the city shall go intocaptivity, But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then the LORD will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south...And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be; 'The LORD is one,' And His name one."

Keep your eyes focused on Israel, it is God's prophetic time clock, and if we want to know what time it is, keep watching!

I want to leave you tonight with these words, these thoughts from U.S. News & World Report, October 26, 1998. In this editorial by Mortimer B. Zuckerman, we read:

"How would we react if a country with which we were negotiating a peace treaty sheltered terrorists who killed 15,000 Americans and wounded 45,000? With anger and resolution to make no further concessions and to strike back. That is exactly the situation the Israelis find themselves in as President Clinton meets Primes Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu and Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat at the Wye Plantation in Maryland. Since the Oslo 'peace process' began five years ago, more than 280 Israelis have been murdered (the size equivalent in a population their size of 15,000 Americans) in over 1,000 terrorist attacks - a worse death toll than in the 15 years before a peace agreement was adopted in Oslo, Norway, in 1993 between then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Arafat...Furthermore, a recent poll shows a majority of Palestinians support the violence. And what does Arafat do? He helps the forces of death. Despite his agreements at Oslo, he has 50 percent more policemen under arms than he should, yet he does not use them against the killers. He uses them against Palestinians suspected of cooperating with Israel. And he has freed virtually all of those who at one time or another were arrested for terrorist attacks. He has even recruited 150 of the released terrorist into his police force, including 33 who are directly implicated in attacks on Israel...When the Western media are roused by a large-scale suicide bombing, Arafat respondswith peaceful noises, but they are a sham. When the world is not paying attention, he constantly talks of jihad. His exhortations to the struggle against Israel can only inspire hatred among his people. They are true believers ready to take Arafat at his word and bring terror into the everyday life of Israelis...Historically, Arab leaders have made such agreements during periods when they feel their situation is weak, knowing full well that they will make war when they are strong...

...To Israelis, the most glaring example of Arafat's true intentions is that he has not changed the language in the Palestinian Covenant, which calls for Israel's destruction, even though he has specifically promised to change the covenant four times in the past five years. The covenant contains at least 14 passages calling for Israel's demise, and similar language is written into the constitution of Arafat's own Fatah movement."
